What are the black streaks on my roof?
The ugly black stains or streaks on asphalt shingles are caused by a very stubborn type of algae called Gloeocapsa Magma. The algae feeds on the crushed limestone that is used in asphalt shingles. Rain spreads the algae down the roof causing the black streaks. These streaks are not only unsightly but cause the shingles to fail prematurely by not allowing the shingles to reflect heat properly. The shingles eventually dry out, or rot. After this happens, they will curl up and cause roof leaks.
Does having black streaks mean I need a new roof?
The answer is no. It just means your roof needs to be cleaned. Just by having your roof washed, you are adding years of performance to the shingles. A lot of roofing companies tell people that they need a new roof just because of the black streaks. The truth is, they are wrong. Sadly, 50% of roofs are replaced due to the way they look, not the way they perform. People spend thousands of dollars to replace something that just needed to be cleaned at a fraction of the cost of replacement.
